Usually reserved for objects and things, I have been imagining the word Proximity as an artificial way to describe our relationships and personal intimacy. Musically, the concept translated to a wide spatial and dynamic range, blending seemingly opposite ideas of subtle home recordings and oppressive walls of sound. Our proximity to each other doesn’t correlate to our togetherness and community. More of us are more connected than ever, yet somehow still chronically lonely and dehumanized.
This EP allowed me to leave my comfort zone as a performer. I wanted to make a record showing what violin playing means to me and how the violin can exist in many forms. Although it is first and foremost a recording project, conceptualizing and executing live performances of this music was a vital part of the writing process and continues to shape my artistic plans. I wanted the record to have the freedom and uncertainty of improvisation while maintaining a feeling of inevitability.
Thanks so much for listening.
