Drowning and what comes Afterwards (or My Time Underwater) is the debut double album from Michael Denis Ó Callaghan on Cmntx Records.
The dual titles reflect two different states of suffering: the time within suffering (My Time Underwater) and the challenge of understanding suffering and moving forward (Drowning and what comes Afterwards).
This album is dedicated to Ahmed and everyone who knows pain and loss while trying to find a way forward.
Liner Notes by Nyokabi Kariũki:
"Michael and I have often talked about water, particularly about writing music about water, so listening to this record on a rainy Tuesday afternoon felt, in a way — like an inside joke (perhaps between me, Michael and nature) was forming. Really, the titles of the album already weakened me before I started to listen; and as I did, I felt the floaty worlds, painted by careful words or haunting strings or lone trumpet melodies, subsume me.
There is a quietness, I feel, that exists when you hear sounds of water in the ears, and this record felt like water was next to you; nudging you along, enveloping you, pacing your body’s heartbeat against gently oscillating ripples. I suggest listening on a quiet morning, perhaps on a Tuesday, when the rain is there to give you a little giggle with us; and to pull you gently into the waves, too."
