The Juniper Suite
Nicki Sekhar
cmntx-044The Juniper Suite is a semi-fictional recorded monodrama by composer and vocalist Nicki Sekhar, which chronicles the story of a protagonist through their journey of love, loss, demonic possession, and pyromania.
This is a journey through a year of unraveling—from sun-drunk summer to the bitter cold of winter, from the grip of something monstrous to the tentative promise of spring. It's about the person we become when we stop caring, and the fight to find our way back.
The Brooklyn-based artist, who has worked with ensembles such as Hypercube, The Rhythm Method, Dither, and Uniting Voices Chicago, begins their chronicles of a dark and twisted spiral into the darkest depths of one’s self with ‘Love’
The lead single is our entrance to the narrative arc, tracing the contours of first love and its inevitable dissolution. The protagonist, despite finding solace in romance, cannot escape an underlying restlessness—a fundamental inability to surrender to contentment. This track is driven by a pointillistic string pizzicato line, which traditional folk instrumentation sits on top of. It’s also inspired by a real-life apple-scented perfume (called “Love”) which Nicki wore throughout the creation of this work.
'I'm Cold,' the second single, is our first big emotional explosion—the moment the dam finally breaks. All the feelings brought on by our protagonist's breakup start to bubble violently to the surface, mirrored in the edgier and more distorted guitar instrumentation that cuts through the sonic landscape like shards of glass. This is where the carefully maintained facade begins to crack.
It's also our first instance of shifting time signatures, which becomes a haunting theme throughout the work—each rhythmic disruption creating a visceral lack of groundedness, as if the floor keeps dropping out from under our protagonist's feet. The music lurches and stumbles, refusing to settle into anything stable or predictable.
Here, the main character starts to give in to their fascination with suffering, turning it over in their hands like something precious and terrible. There's an almost perverse comfort in the pain, a sense that they want to stay submerged in this frozen state forever—numb, suspended, unreachable. 'I'm Cold' captures that dangerous moment when we stop trying to climb out of the darkness and start building a home there instead.
The third single, 'Meditation,' marks a pivotal turning point in our protagonist's descent—a moment of unexpected tenderness amid the chaos. Drawing from Nicki's formative years as a choir singer, this piece strips away the jagged edges and distortion of 'I'm Cold' to reveal something more vulnerable, more sacred. Here, the cacophony of self-criticism and inner torment that has been building throughout the narrative suddenly quiets. It's a radical act of compassion in a journey that has been defined by self-destruction.
The chorale structure itself becomes a kind of ritual, with vocal lines weaving in and out of each other like a hymn sung in an empty church. As the voices gradually overlap and drift away from one another, they create a dreamlike haze—a sonic fog where clarity dissolves and the boundaries between reality and reverie begin to blur. By the track's end, we're left wondering if this moment of grace ever happened at all, or if it was just another fleeting illusion in our protagonist's unraveling mind.
